Average position refers to the typical ranking or placement your brand, website, or content receives when it appears inside AI-generated answers (for example, first, second, or lower in a list of citations or recommendations).
Average position refers to the typical ranking or placement your brand, website, or content receives when it appears inside AI-generated answers (for example, first, second, or lower in a list of citations or recommendations).
It shows where your brand usually shows up when AI tools mention it. Getting mentioned is good, but appearing near the top (position 1 or 2) is much more valuable because users tend to focus on the first few sources AI presents.
This metric became important as AI answers replaced traditional search result lists. Instead of competing for blue links, brands now compete for prominent placement inside the AI's response itself.
Top positions in AI answers are highly valuable and stable. Research shows that positions #1 and #2 in AI citations have 99.4% stability week-over-week, meaning once you reach the top, you tend to stay there.

Average position works by measuring how prominently AI engines rank your brand among the sources they choose to cite or recommend:
Source evaluation. AI assesses relevance, authority, freshness, and content quality.
Ranking logic. Sources are ordered based on how well they match the query and user intent.
Position assignment. Your brand is given a numerical rank (1, 2, 3…) within each AI answer.
Averaging. Positions are collected across many real prompts and then averaged.
Impact on visibility. Lower numbers (closer to 1) = significantly higher attention and trust.
Average position is calculated by tracking your placement across a large set of relevant prompts over time.
If your brand appears in position 1, 3, and 4 across three different prompts:
Average Position = (1 + 3 + 4) ÷ 3 = 2.67
Lower numbers are better.
Many teams also convert this into an Average Position Score (0–100) using: (10 ÷ Average Position) × 100 (capped at 100).
Average Position only matters when your brand actually appears; zero mentions mean no position to measure.
Different AI platforms calculate and display positions differently.
Top positions (1–3) deliver the majority of attention and perceived authority.
Position can fluctuate based on prompt wording, location, timing, and freshness of content.
A strong Average Position in AI often correlates with strong traditional rankings, but the reverse is not always true.
For local businesses, reviews and business profiles heavily influence Average Position in recommendation-style queries.
