AI Overview marketing means making sure your brand shows up, gets described correctly, and gets linked to when Google generates a summary at the top of a search result page.
It's a different job than classic SEO. A page can rank fourth on Google and still get named in the AI Overview above it. Another page can rank first and never get mentioned at all. The summary pulls from whatever Google's systems judge most useful for that specific question, not strictly from position in the organic list.
A Google search used to end with a list of ten links. Now a chunk of that page is Google's own answer, built before you scroll to a single one of those links.
With AI Overview, the answer arrives first, and the tabs are optional.
Instead of competing only for a click on the results page, brands now compete for a spot inside the answer sitting above that same page.
Google said AI Overview passed 2.5 billion monthly users by Google I/O in May 2026. The feature showed up on roughly half of U.S. search queries by early 2026, up from under 7% about a year earlier.
For marketers, that means visibility inside the summary now matters for the same queries that used to require a page-one ranking. A user can get a full answer without opening a single website. The click becomes optional instead of automatic.
